Is Sharing Caring?

header .jpg

Since 1886, the Coca-Cola Company has been sharing their soft drink with world. Traditionally served ice cold in a glass bottle, the company made a major switch to plastic in the mid-20th century that allowed them to keep up with the times as well as the rising demand for global product distribution. It takes a world wide effort to manufacture the approximately 3m tons of plastic material the company uses each year. For example we can track this effort to the sourcing of raw materials in Malaysia, transferring them to India for production and eventually shipping out bottles for sale around the world. This sense of universalism was reinforced in their companies advertising campaign “Share a Coke” that launched between 2011-2016, asking consumers to share a beverage with their fellow citizens, beloved sports teams and even exotic locations.  The Coca-Cola bottle has become one of the most recognizable images in the world, but behind the well-designed packaging one must consider the logistics behind creating and sharing a plastic bottle. How does Coca-Cola share with individuals who farm their raw materials? How do they share with the communities who are built around their manufacturing plants? How do they share with the earth? There is an old saying “sharing is caring” and this exhibition seeks to examine if this saying holds true for the Coca-Cola Company as they “Share a Coke” with the world.
